Friday Assembly Changes in the New Year

WSRF’s Social Literacy Program includes the grades 1-8 Buddy Program which pairs older mentors (5th-8th grades) with younger buddies (1st-4th grades) to spend time together wherein they connect with each other, connect to the campus, and weave the social fabric of community. You may have heard your child share how they met their buddy for:

  • Buddy lunch, pumpkin carving, crafts projects, seasonal get togethers

  • Community service on or off campus

  • Our annual Field Day of cooperative games

The Faculty is striving to build up this aspect of our Social Literacy Program even further and have found a way to do just that by changing our Friday Assembly schedule a bit! Our new schedule will begin in January 2023 and will look like this:

Every 1st Friday we will continue to have our usual all-grades spiral assembly in the Hall or just outside the sunroom depending on weather with one class sharing something they have been working on. The Honeybee Café will be open for parents to enjoy with all proceeds going toward a non-profit of the class’s choice.

On the other Fridays of each month, we will have Buddy Assemblies during which each pair of buddy classes will meet in one or the other grade’s classroom for the first 15 minutes of the day.

During this time, the students will engage in one of a variety of activities such as:

• Share what they’ve been working on (in speech work, in main lesson, in movement, in reading…)

• Play a cooperative game together as pairs, small groups, or whole classes

• Learn a social dance or engage in another social inclusion exercise together

At 8:30, a 7th grader will announce who was granted the Pizza Hat due to their random act of kindness and let everyone know it’s time to end their time together by reciting the school verse and singing the school song in the visiting classroom or outside space they were meeting in.

What does this mean for parents who come each week? We heartily invite you, dear parents, to continue to participate in our Friday assemblies, whether they are on the 1st Friday or the Buddy Assemblies with your child’s class and their buddy class. We love your attendance! On Buddy Assembly Fridays, just follow your child to their classroom!
